You Don’t Need a 9–5 or a 24/7 Business: Creative Ways Women Are Making Money and Living Fully
I’m just going to say it: No, you don’t need a 9-5 or a 24/7 business.
If you’ve ever felt trapped between two extremes — the traditional 9–5 that drains your soul and the full-time business hustle that burns you out — you’re not alone. So many women crave freedom, purpose, and financial stability, but it often feels like you have to pick one thing to get there.
One job, one business, one income stream.
It’s a square peg/round hole type situation.
But what if you didn’t? What if freedom came from expanding your view of what’s possible instead of narrowing it? What if it was about finding what fit instead of continuing to try to force it to work.
In this post, we’re diving into how women are creatively combining part-time jobs, passion projects, freelance gigs, and flexible businesses to design lifestyles that feel rich, balanced, and fulfilling — without the burnout or the all-or-nothing energy.
Why Choosing Just One Thing Can Make You Feel More Trapped Than Free
We’ve been taught that the key to success is focus — pick one path, master one skill, commit to one thing.
But, for many women, especially multi-passionate, creative ones, that “one thing” approach can actually feel like a prison. If you choose one thing, what will you be missing out on?
It feels like you have to sacrifice your happiness and fulfillment to be STUCK in limitations.
- You feel boxed in. You have so many passions and ideas, and choosing one means abandoning the others.
- It creates unrealistic pressure. That one thing has to support you emotionally, creatively, and financially — and if it doesn’t, you feel like you’re failing.
- You feel guilty taking time for anything outside that path — hobbies, rest, joy — because you’re “not doing enough.”
The irony? The pursuit of freedom becomes the very thing that drains you.
You might be wondering…Is there a solution?!
My Story: The Pressure to Leave My 9–5 Led Me Straight Into Burnout
When I first started my businesses, all I wanted was to leave my 9–5. I was desperate for freedom, for time, for joy — so I convinced myself that if I could just get one of my businesses to fully support me, I’d finally feel free.
But the truth? They weren’t ready. They weren’t set up to succeed, yet. And because I was operating from a place of urgency and pressure, everything I did carried that desperate energy. I tried to make things work fast.
I launched things before I was clear. I threw spaghetti at the wall — and nothing stuck. There was no strategy. There was no wiggle room to create something sustainable.
My businesses didn’t thrive because they couldn’t breathe. They were weighed down by the pressure to be the only path to freedom. I had backed myself into a corner without realizing it — and I was too afraid to explore other options that might actually give me the breathing room I needed.
I couldn’t see other possibilities that would give me the time freedom and financial security I needed.
Why It’s Hard to See Other Possibilities (and the Fears That Keep Us Stuck)
Let’s get back to why it’s so hard to find a solution and actually talk about what that solution is.
When we are conditioned for so long to accept the way most of society lives life, we become complacent. We forget to challenge everything we currently know or are experiencing in our lives.
We don’t explore creative options because we’ve been told they don’t count. In a way, we’ve come to just accept the norm – 9-5 job/full-time career option, and then see what else you can fit into your life.
And even when we DARE to dream, we are met with push-back like:
- “You can’t make money doing that.”
- “That’s not a real job.”
- “You need one stable income stream.”
These thoughts come from people who, they themselves, don’t dare to take the risk and think outside of the box.
And under the surface these opinions of others trigger the deeper fears:
- Fear of judgment (“She can’t figure it out.”)
- Fear of failure (“If I can’t make this business work, maybe I’m not cut out for it.”)
- Fear of losing time (“What if I waste another year trying?”)
- Fear of not knowing enough to do it “right” (I’ve never done it this way before. What if I have no idea what I’m doing?”
These stories keep us on paths that drain us because they feel safer than starting over.
But true freedom isn’t found in either/or — it’s found in both/and. It’s found in being bold enough to reimagine your lifestyle from the ground up, in a way that gives you all the things you need and want.
Start with the Life You Want — Then Build Backwards
Here is a novel idea (and a perspective shift to get you started): Instead of trying to squeeze your life around your work, flip it.
Ask yourself:
- How many hours a week do I actually want to work?
- What do I want time for each week — movement, passion projects, creative work, family, solo time?
- How do I want my days to feel?
Then reverse-engineer your income based on those answers. Instead of saying, “What business can make me 6-figures?” ask, “What do I want my lifestyle to look like, and what blend of income streams can support that?”
This is like a “choose your own adventure book.” You choose what you want this life of yours to look like and how it will flow. You are the only one you need to make happy.
Sometimes it just takes coming at the situation from a different angle. This time come from it as LIFE first then career/business. It may time different tries, but eventually you will come up with the formula that gives you exactly what you are looking for.
And before you say, “it can’t be done,” before you write it off as “there is no way that will give me the schedule and money I need,” just play along. Just do the exercise. Just commit to stretching your brain and your wiring to explore a new way of seeing things.
Creative Examples of Real-Life Schedules That Work
If you are like me, you like examples. I like to see possibilities so that I can start to see it for myself. Here are some examples of how you can re–organize your time, career, business, hobbies to better fit what you want and where you are in your life right now:
The Flex Schedule
- Works part-time at a boutique Mon–Wed
- Runs a coaching business on Thursdays
- Takes Fridays for creative writing and content batching
- Weekend fully off or open for passive income focus or time spent at her kiddos’ soccer games.
→ Gives her financial stability while building a business slowly with heart
The Passion-First Plan
- Works freelance 10 hours a week designing websites
- Works two days a week at her dream profession
- Teaches yoga 2 evenings a week
- Spends 1 day writing and recording content for a podcast or course
- Has extra time each week for coffee with friends, and date night!
→ Allows for creative flow, movement, and variety without financial strain
The Sabbatical Season
- Leaves full-time job but picks up a flexible part-time remote contract
- Spends the rest of the week exploring passions, taking classes, and testing ideas without pressure.
→ Creates white space to figure out next steps without urgency
The Mompreneur Model
- Works 3 days a week as a VA during school hours
- Has a product-based side hustle she runs on evenings after putting her kiddo to bed.
- Has a schedule that allows her to drop off and pick up kids from school
→ Prioritizes family time while bringing in consistent income
These are real approaches. Your version will look different — but the key is to start with your needs, not someone else’s path.
You get to build your life around your current life situation or what is important to you at the moment.
For me, I work 30 hours a week doing massages at a luxury spa (I love my massage career). I have 3 full days off from massage to take clients in my business, record podcast episodes, and write my blog. And I also have time to go to the gym a few days a week, go to my pilates classes twice a week, meet with my personal trainer 2x a month, and have plenty of time for date nights, shopping, and sitting by the pool. Plus, it is easy for me to find coverage at the spa so that I can take off for vacations or I can travel Tuesday-Thursday and work remotely in my business those days.
All the pieces create the life of freedom I desire while doing the things I love doing.
You get to decide what that looks like for you.
You Don’t Need One Perfect Path — You Need a Life That Fits
You don’t need to pick one thing to prove you’re serious. You don’t need to build a full-time business overnight. You don’t need to stay in a job that drains you just because it’s “secure.”
You get to build a life that fits you. One that allows for joy, purpose, stability, flexibility, and rest — all at once.
This could be leaving your soul-sucking 9-5 and getting a “transition” job that you love while working on building your business. Or finding a job that pays you well enough and gives you the schedule you desire so you have more time for a business or time for your family and passions.
You don’t need to lean everything onto ONE career, ONE business, ONE way of utilizing your schedule.
(Doesn’t that sound so freeing?!)
